Like all Macs, the MacBook Air comes with Apple”s latest, greatest operating system, and on the 2011 models it”s the OS X Lion. With the Lion operating system you”ll get a lot of functional software, such as Mail, Address Book, Time Machine, Safari and Screen Sharing. It also has some fun software, such as Photo Booth, iChat and QuickTime.

As far as Mac operating systems go, OS X Lion really changed the way Mac users interact with their computers. In many ways it moved toward the familiar functionality of touch screen devices, like the iPad and iPhone. For example, through a program called LaunchPad you can access and use apps, including ones you”ve already purchased for your iPad or iPhone through your iTunes account. What”s more, OS X Lion allows you to use the laptop”s trackpad to swipe and zoom, using hand motions similar to those on a touchscreen device [source: Apple].

Features

  • Apple stuck to the low resolution to stay with the 16:10 ratio rather than the 16:9. Here MacBook Air 6,2 (13-inch, Mid 2013) loses to Windows-based laptops of the same price segment which offer 1080p.
  • The downgrade of CPU clock speed has to do with the enhanced battery life up to 10 hours. Now, the clock speed figures don’t mean much in a CPU performance and efficiency. Haswell family is 10% more efficient than the predecessor thanks to the new architecture.

Miscellanea

  • As we mention it above, the MacBook Air 6,2 (13-inch, Mid 2013) customized iteration with Intel Core i7 aboard has two storage options: 128 or 256GB solid-state drive. It’s still a riddle, why Apple never offered it as a standard configuration as it happened to the CTO models of the previous years.
  • Of 4GB RAM the integrated Intel HD GPU takes 1.5GB, so only 2.5GB are left available for an end-user.
  • MacBook Air 6,2 (13-inch, 1.4GHz Intel Core i5, Early 2014) has no improvements at all save for the faster Haswell CPU with ultra-low TDP. The thermal design power (TDP) or thermal design point, is the maximum amount of heat a CPU or GPU generates. The maximum in its turn is determined by the cooling system power. In a nutshell, this feature means, that the processor is harder to overheat under normal performance and easier to cool by system fans.
  • Intel Core i5 (4260U) processor belongs to Haswell family and supports hyperthreading. Thus, the end-user got two physical cores and two virtual ones.
  • MacBook Air 6,2 (13-inch, 1.7GHz Intel Core i7, Early 2014) is also identical to the buid-to-order MacBook Air 6,2 (13-inch, 1.7GHz Intel Core i7, Mid 2013). Obviously, Apple isn’t too generous when in comes to customizing their products. Both laptops, though with one year between them, run on the same Haswell processor with exactly the same clock speed and overclock speed.
  • PCIe is the Apple proprietary socket for SSD drives, so have it in mind when choosing the SSDs for upgrade. SSD drive is the only home upgradeable part of MacBook Air and an experienced user can easily boost up the storage volume. You can find 1 TB SSD drives in the market nowadays.
  • Solid-State or, as some reviewers put it, flash storage drives are manufactured by Toshiba, Samsung, SunDisk and Micron Technology, that’s why MacBooks Air 6,2 (13-inch, Early 2014) yield various results in benchmarks.
